Niger Organizes National Conference to Develop Transition Charter

The Nigerien government has scheduled a National Conference from February 15 to 19 to draft a preliminary transition charter, marking a key step in the country’s political transition.

The announcement was made in a letter from the Minister of the Interior addressed to regional governors, department prefects, and commune administrators.

President of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP) and Head of State Abdourahamane Tiani has appointed a commission comprising around 20 former ministers, senior officials, and civil society representatives to oversee the conference.

The commission’s mandate includes analyzing reports from Regional Conferences and proposing a draft transition charter. This document will define the transition’s duration, governance structures, selection procedures for officials, and their responsibilities.

Niger has been under military rule since July 26, 2023, when President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a coup led by General Tiani. In August 2023, Tiani pledged that the transition would not exceed three years.
