Nigeria’s Police Chief Prohibits Officers in Civilians from Carrying Rifles

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strict directive prohibiting police officers from carrying rifles while dressed in civilian attire.

During a virtual meeting with police managers, the IGP emphasized that human rights violations and misconduct will not be tolerated. He warned that any officer found guilty of such actions will face serious consequences.

The directive also applies to tactical squads, who must now operate in approved uniforms and adhere to standard procedures. The IGP further banned the transfer of cases without written approval, stating that such actions cause delays in justice and unnecessary burdens on affected individuals.

This move aims to ensure professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
