150,000 Ghanaians to Receive Support from GHC 1.6M European Union Humanitarian Aid for Cholera Response

The European Union (EU) has allocated GHC 1.6 million (€100,000) in humanitarian funding to support communities affected by Ghana’s ongoing cholera outbreak.

The EU, in a statement pledged that the financial aid would support the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) in providing essential relief, including chlorine for water purification, handwashing stations, and public health education initiatives.

As of December 2024, the Ghana Health Service had recorded 4,850 suspected cases and 35 deaths, despite ongoing vaccination efforts to contain the disease.

To maximise impact, relief efforts will prioritise high-risk areas, including displacement camps and informal settlements with limited access to clean water and sanitation.

The EU estimates that 150,000 vulnerable individuals will benefit from the intervention, reducing the risk of further transmission.

The outbreak, which began in October 2024, has spread to 36 districts across five regions, namely, Greater Accra, Central, Western, Eastern, and the Ashanti Region.
