Fubara acknowledges Supreme Court ruling on Rivers Lawmakers, awaits legal clarity

in News

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has formally recognized the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule and 26 others as valid members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This development marks a significant shift in the ongoing political crisis in the state, which has been characterized by intense legal battles and political tensions.

In a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, Governor Fubara noted that his administration is conducting a thorough review of the implications of the judgment, particularly regarding state funds and local government administration.

“At this time, we are awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the judgment. We will carefully evaluate the situation and determine the next steps to take in the best interest of Rivers State and its people,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the Supreme Court’s decision, Governor Fubara emphasized that the core issue of the lawmakers’ defection, which led to their disputed status, was not addressed by the apex court. This matter remains pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt. “Since the issue of defection wasn’t on the table before the learned Justices, in their eyes, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers until that matter comes before them,” the statement explained.

Governor Fubara assured the people of Rivers State that his administration remains committed to protecting the best interests of the state and upholding the rule of law in all matters. He urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding as the government seeks further legal clarity on the ruling and its broader implications.

The governor’s statement has been interpreted as a cautious approach, aimed at navigating the complex legal and political landscape surrounding the lawmakers’ status. As the situation continues to unfold, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the government will implement the Supreme Court’s ruling and address the underlying issues that led to the crisis.

In the meantime, the people of Rivers State are being urged to remain patient and law-abiding, even as they await further developments in this ongoing saga.
