Nigerian authorities have warned the public about a fraudulent social media campaign claiming to offer donations on behalf of General Abdourahamane Tiani.
In a statement released on Monday, the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP) of Niger denied any involvement with the campaign.
The document, signed by the Minister Director of the Cabinet of the President of the CNSP, clarified that messages circulating online falsely claim to announce a digital charitable donation in the name of General Tiani, the head of the Nigerien state.
The authorities described the campaign as a phishing attempt designed to steal personal and banking information under the pretense of a charitable cause.
Investigations have been launched to track down the perpetrators, who will face legal action if apprehended.
