The Nigerian government is calling for the collaboration of the private sector to attract investment in the Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) ecosystem.
This is even as the Federal Government acknowledged the need for sustained investment in LPG infrastructure across the region.
Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), made this known on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the 6th West Africa LGP expo, themed “LPG as clean fuel for energy transition in West Africa”.
Speaking at the event, Ekpo, who was represented by Abel Igheghe, technical adviser on downstream to the minister, stressed the need for a unified regional approach to LPG adoption, stressing that energy transition is not a journey any country can undertake alone.
“Governments and private entities must work collaboratively to establish efficient supply chains, improve safety standards, and create an enabling environment that attracts investment in the LPG sector,” he said.
“To accelerate LPG adoption, we are implementing targeted policy interventions, including removing bottlenecks that hinder investment in the sector.”
The minister outlined several government measures designed to support LPG adoption, including tax waivers on LPG imports and equipment, as well as streamlined importation processes for cylinders and accessories.
Ekpo added that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) is developing a pricing framework in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to ensure price stability and potential reductions in LPG costs.
He also noted that the presidential compressed natural gas (PCNGi) initiative is working in synergy with the LPG sector to expand clean energy alternatives.
“By supporting both LPG and CNG adoption, we are strengthening our energy security while reducing dependence on expensive and polluting fuels,” the minister added.
Ekpo reiterated the government’s commitment to leading the charge in sustainable energy transition, stressing that collective efforts can drive a cleaner, greener, and prosperous future for West Africa.
