ECOWAS leaders have set plans in motion to create the regional single currency, ‘the Eco’, aimed at deepening regional economic integration among member states.
At the opening ceremony of the 11th meeting of the Convergence Council, held on Monday in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Adebayo Olawale Edun, firmly supported the creation of the regional currency.
According to him, ‘the Eco’, which is expected to enhance regional integration, will also improve the living conditions of West African populations and strengthen cooperation between ECOWAS member countries.
The meeting, which brought together finance ministers and central bank governors from the member states, aimed to examine the latest developments regarding the single currency project.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to monitor the action plan for the launch of the single currency.
