Nigeria’s Kano State Islamic Police (Hisbah) have arrested 20 Muslims for eating and drinking in public during the holy month of Ramadan.

Five individuals were detained for selling food during fasting hours, according to local reports.

Hisbah deputy commander Mujahid Aminudeen confirmed the arrests on Monday, stating they were necessary to uphold the sanctity of Ramadan.

He emphasized that adult Muslims openly breaking their fast in public is a serious concern and will not be tolerated.

The arrested individuals will face trial in a Sharia court, where they could be penalized under Islamic law.

Aminudeen clarified that Hisbah’s enforcement applies strictly to Muslims and does not concern non-Muslims.
