Super Eagles most spiritual player left out of World Cup Qualifiers squad” – Ex-Nigeria Star slams Chelle

Taiwo Awoniyi, regarded as the most spiritual player in the Super Eagles squad, has been excluded from Nigeria’s provisional list for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

This decision by head coach Eric Chelle has sparked a backlash, with former Nigeria international Dele Abubakr criticizing the omission.

Abubakr, speaking exclusively to Legit.ng, emphasized Awoniyi’s dedication and spiritual influence within the Super Eagles team.

“I was shocked when the 39-man list was released yesterday (Tuesday) and Taiwo Awoniyi’s name was missing. Awoniyi is one of the most dedicated players in the current squad and always gives his best whenever he is called upon”

“Awoniyi is the most spiritual player in the squad,” he said. “Whenever he scores for Nigeria or his club, he celebrates by bringing out Bible scriptures. His presence would have been crucial, especially during tough moments.”

Awoniyi removed his shirt to reveal a printed reference to Ecclesiastes 12:13.

Awoniyi has long been known for his strong faith, which he openly shares with his teammates. His post-goal celebrations often include Bible verses, making him not just a player, but a spiritual figure who inspires the team.

Awoniyi would have served as a spiritual intercessor in the Super Eagles squad when they are facing challenges.

Taiwo Awoniyi, the Super Eagles' most spiritual player, has been excluded from the World Cup qualifiers, drawing criticism from Dele Abubakr.

Awoniyi celebrates his first EPL goal of the season with a touching tribute, covering his face with his shinpads, which were inscribed with the Bible verse James 1:17: “Every good and perfect gift is from above.”

While Awoniyi’s spiritual role is undeniable, questions have also been raised about his fitness. Former footballer Clinton Morrison suggested that the striker’s limited playing time this season may have impacted his inclusion in the squad, as he is still recovering his full form.

“Taiwo Awoniyi doesn’t read the game like Chris Wood does. You can see he’s a striker coming back to full fitness”

The 27 year old has struggled for game time, starting only 20 Premier League matches and playing just 250 minutes with 1 goal in the Premier league.
