The Burkinabe government is expanding the storage capacity of the National Hydrocarbons Company (SONABHY) with the recent $70 million acquisition of the Tema Multi-Purpose Terminal hydrocarbon depot in Ghana.
Authorities believe that owning a depot outside Burkina Faso, equipped with sufficient storage infrastructure, will help strengthen the country’s energy security.
The Council of Ministers justified the acquisition by highlighting that the Tema depot is already operational, providing Burkina Faso with a strategic storage facility.
Another key advantage cited by the government is the ability to direct deliveries to a SONABHY-specific depot in case of disruptions along other supply corridors.
Additionally, the move is expected to reduce costs by minimizing reliance on third-party depots.
