A South African couple has reportedly put their wedding on hold because the bride, who is a doctor, insists she will keep her maiden name after the marriage.
According to an X user Kuanele, who shared the story, the lady wants to keep her maiden name because she is the first doctor in her family.
However, her man said if he is going to pay bride price, she has to take his surname.
“The chat on the radio rn. Chat is that a couple has put getting married on hold bc he wants her to take his surname but she wants a double barrel bc of she’s a doctor. She’s the first dr in her family so she wants to keep that name,” she wrote.
“Man is saying no bc if he’s gonna pay lobola and all, she has to take his surname.”
The post is currently generating varying reactions, with most people in support of the doctor while others, particularly men, sided with the man.
A PhD student, Idayat Jinadu wrote: “After all the sacrifices & love my parents have poured into making me a PhD, I refuse to abandon the name that carries my history and their efforts. I will not take the name of a family who doesn’t know the beginning of my life nor contributed to my growth in the name of marriage.”
