A new video shows Serbia’s parliament being thrown into chaos on Tuesday as opposition lawmakers used tear gas and smoke grenades in a protest against the government. The chaos inside Serbia’s parliament resulted in at least three lawmakers sustaining injuries, with one in critical condition.

The video, which was shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows opposition lawmakers clashing with lawmakers from Serbia’s ruling party in parliament as horns and whistles were blown and smoke grenades, tear gas, and flares were dispersed throughout the chamber. According to Fox News, Serbian news outlets claimed that lawmakers also threw water bottles and eggs during the chaotic meeting on Tuesday as hundreds of protesters gathered outside Serbia’s parliament building.

Fox News reported that at least three lawmakers were injured on Tuesday, with one of the lawmakers being listed in critical condition after having a stroke.

According to Fox News, the chaotic clash in Serbia’s parliament on Tuesday comes in the wake of mass protests that have been sparked by a fatal canopy collapse at a railway station last November. Protesters have demanded that the government be held responsible for the fatal canopy collapse amid accusations that the incident was caused by government corruption.

Fox News reported that the major protests in Serbia ultimately led to Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic earlier this year; however, Serbia’s parliament is still required to approve Vucevic’s resignation before it takes effect. The outlet noted that despite the prime minister’s resignation, the major protests against government corruption have continued throughout the country.

According to Fox News, Serbian lawmakers were initially scheduled on Tuesday to vote on a law that would increase university education funding following demands by student protesters; however, lawmakers from Serbia’s opposition parties claimed that lawmakers from Serbia’s majority party were planning to approve multiple other measures. The opposition lawmakers claimed that the majority party’s plan was illegal and that the parliament should confirm Vucevic’s resignation prior to approving the measures.

Opposition lawmakers rushed toward the parliament’s speaker and clashed with security guards on Tuesday after the country’s ruling coalition, which is currently led by the Serbian Progressive Party, approved Tuesday’s agenda, according to Fox News. The outlet noted that other brawls and chaotic proceedings have taken place in Serbia’s parliament multiple times over the past few decades.
