The United States Postal Service (USPS) is preparing to cut 10,000 jobs as U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy works with the General Services Administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to make the USPS more efficient.
On Thursday, DeJoy sent a letter to Congress, informing lawmakers that he had signed an agreement with DOGE and the General Services Administration to address “big problems” at the government agency.
Fox News reported that the agreement comes following a previous announcement by the USPS that 10,000 jobs would be cut as a result of an early retirement offer to eligible USPS employees. The postmaster general’s letter explained that the 10,000 job cuts are expected to take place over the next month.
In Thursday’s letter, DeJoy described USPS as a “broken business model that was not financially sustainable without critically necessary and core change.”
“Fixing a broken organization that had experienced close to $100 billion in losses and was projected to lose another $200 billion, without a bankruptcy proceeding, is a daunting task,” DeJoy told U.S. lawmakers. “Fixing a heavily legislated and overly regulated organization as massive, important, cherished, misunderstood and debated as the United States Postal Service, with such a broken business model, is even more difficult.”

According to Fox News, USPS has repeatedly struggled with its roughly $78 billion annual budget over the past several years. The agreement between USPS and DOGE is expected to address the agency’s “big problems,” such as regulatory requirements that DeJoy said often restrict “normal business practice” and the improper management of the USPS Worker’s Compensation Program and retirement assets.
“Last night I signed an agreement with the General Services Administration and DOGE representatives to assist us in identifying and achieving further efficiencies,” DeJoy wrote. “This is an effort aligned with our efforts, as while we have accomplished a great deal, there is much more to be done. We are happy to have others to assist us in our worthwhile cause.”
In a statement obtained by Fox News following Thursday’s letter, Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-VA.) warned that DOGE’s partnership with the USPS will have “catastrophic consequences for all Americans.”
Connolly added, “The only thing worse for the Postal Service than DeJoy’s ‘Delivering for America’ plan is turning the service over to Elon Musk and DOGE so they can undermine it, privatize it, and then profit off Americans’ loss.”
