The Katsina State Government has confirmed that Abdulsalam Rabiu-Faskari, the winner of the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition, along with his father and brother, remains alive but in the custody of their abductors. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr. Bala Salisu-Zango, on Friday, March 14, in Katsina.

Rabiu-Faskari and his family members were kidnapped two days ago while traveling from Katsina to Faskari after being honored by Governor Dikko Radda for his exceptional performance in the competition held in Kebbi. He is set to represent Nigeria at the international edition of the Qur’anic recitation competition.

Salisu-Zango addressed recent media reports and condolence messages, including a statement by the Special Adviser to the Kebbi State Governor on Media and Publicity, which suggested that Rabiu-Faskari had been killed by his captors. He clarified that the Katsina State Government’s information indicates that the victims are alive and healthy in captivity.

As of Friday, March 14, the abductors were demanding a ransom of N30 million from the family. Governor Radda described the incident as unfortunate and expressed solidarity with the victims and their loved ones. He assured that the government is taking necessary steps to secure their release and urged security agencies to intensify efforts in ensuring their safe rescue.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling the security challenges plaguing the state. He also called on residents to offer prayers for the safe return of Rabiu-Faskari and others held captive by bandits.
