The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagun, has dismissed reports of his purported resignation from the party amid the internal crisis rocking it, describing the reports as fake news and the handiwork of mischief-makers.
The embattled Damagun who made the denial in a statement issued by his personal assistant, Nuru Shehu Jos on Saturday, described the report as mere rumors deliberately spread by enemies of the party to mislead the public and destabilize it.
The statement said Damagun has not stepped down from his position, emphasizing that the party’s constitution guarantees the National Chairman a four-year term in the first instance and as such, he has no reason to resign.
“Our attention has been drawn to a fabricated report claiming that Ambassador Umar Damagun has resigned. This is nothing but fake news orchestrated to create confusion,” Jos said in the statement.
“We insist that this malicious content against Ambassador Damagun is false, defamatory, and a criminal act. The law will soon catch up with those responsible for this mischief.
“We call on all members of the PDP—elders, stakeholders, youth, and women’s groups—to disregard this fake news and remain united. The party remains firm under the leadership of Ambassador Damagun.”
The statement also warned those behind the false reports to cease spreading misinformation or risk facing legal consequences.
