The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Kelly Okungbowa, also known as Ebo Stone, for alleged naira abuse.
The arrest was carried out by operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate on Monday, 17 March 2025.
SaharaReporters on Sunday exclusively reported that Okungbowa was caught on video spraying freshly minted naira notes on two strippers at a private party.
Okungbowa, who served as the Chairman of the Edo State Asset Recovery Committee and the State Coordinator of the Public Safety Response Team (PSR), is known to be a close associate of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The video, which surfaced online over the weekend, showed Okungbowa throwing bundles of cash into the air as two scantily dressed women danced around him, rubbing the notes on their bodies.
Okungbowa was taken into custody following the video showing him spraying and mutilating the naira at a bar on 9 March 2025.
“He will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed,” the EFCC stated.
His arrest comes amid heightened enforcement against naira abuse, a violation that carries legal consequences under Nigerian law.
The Edo State Government had earlier suspended him from his role as coordinator of the PSRT.
Meanwhile in a similar incident, SaharaReporters reported on Monday how EFCC arrested Murja Ibrahim Kunya, a well-known TikTok influencer, who has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano over allegations of naira mutilation.
SaharaReporters gathered that Kunya was taken into custody on Saturday following accusations of currency misuse.
