Secondary school teacher, students arrested over cultism in Cross River

By Frank Ulom

A secondary school teacher and some students were arrested over alleged cultism at Government Secondary School, Akai Efa, Calabar Municipality Local Government Area of Cross River State.

CONVERSEER gathered that the teacher (name withheld) and the students (name withheld) were arrested on Wednesday afternoon after a fight broke out at the school.

According to a reliable source, the fight started between two students which prompted the teacher to step in.

“As the teacher held one of the students, the student became furious that the teacher held him for the other student to beat him. So, the student ganged up with some guys and they beat up the teacher.

“The teacher also went and brought his gang to beat up the student. It became a cult war and it took the effort of some government officials and the police to arrest the situation,” the source said.

When our Reporter visited the school on Thursday morning, we were told the principal was having a meeting with the Commissioner for Education, Dr Stephen Odey in his office at the Ministry of Education, Calabar.

However, a teacher who pleaded anonymity confirmed the story, saying the police arrested a teacher and some students on the allegations of cultism and the fight that brewed on Wednesday.

Efforts to reach SP Irene Ugbo, Police Spokesperson in Cross River State, proved abortive as she did not take her calls on Wednesday – and – her phone did not go through on Thursday due to the poor network facing the nation.
