The Teachers Continuous Training Institute (TCTI) Biase – Cross River State, has kickstarted the training of headteachers in selected primary schools in the state to boost their technological and pedagogical skills.

The 3-day training themed “The Application of Smart Skills To Teaching and Learning in Primary Schools” scheduled to be held between Wednesday, March 13 to Friday, March 15, 2024, has entered the second day. The workshop aims to adopt a total of one hundred headteachers best suited for global standard practices.

In an address delivered by the Deputy Director-General of the Institute, Mrs Mary Omaji who represented the Director-General Professor Taoheed Adedoja highlighted the impacts of the exercise on manpower development and nation-building, noting that the smart application workshop is to prepare headteachers for the task ahead with the evolving (global) curriculum of learning.

The DG reiterated that for primary education to remain competitive and up-to-date, the educational curriculum must be routinely rejigged to bring in the newest innovations in learning that equal global criteria.

“Headteachers are always expected to play key roles in leading the latest trends in teaching and learning as custodians of their schools.

“With the way knowledge is evolving through technology, we must continue to alter our basic and foundational education at the various stages to level up with happenings around the globe, and we must be deliberate about it.

“Therefore, the three-day training on the smart skills’ applications usage is meant to further expose headteachers at the primary level who were carefully selected after a thorough Needs Assessment Exercise that was earlier carried out”, the DG said while declaring the workshop open.

The workshop has visiting resource persons partake in the skills development initiative, one of whom is Professor Martin Olofu, a Curriculum & Instructions Lecturer at the University of Calabar who delivered a paper on ‘Design, Production and Supply of Creative Kits for the Enhancement of Learning’ to effective teaching, stressing that beginners understand faster when practical skills are applied.

The Unical Don was amongst several other stakeholders and participants who took turns to commend the Cross River State Government and the management of the Institute for the smart tech knowledge upgrade on the teachers.
