he Nigerian government has issued a red alert to 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, warning of severe flood risks in 2025.
The alert was issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency during the official presentation of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO), led by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, in Abuja.
According to the agency, approximately 1,249 communities across 176 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 33 states and the FCT fall within high flood-risk zones for 2025.
In addition, the forecast indicates that 2,187 communities in 293 LGAs across 31 states and the FCT are expected to face moderate flood risks this year.
States identified as high-risk include: Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, and Imo.
Others are Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.
