Ghana Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Eastern Region

Ghana is intensifying efforts to combat illegal mining as security operatives conduct assessment operations in the Eastern Region, following a series of irresponsible mining activities that continue to pose a threat to the environment and local communities.

The head of the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Rita Adjei Awatey, has issued a stern warning to illegal miners, declaring that they will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice.

The task force has carried out operations in six districts : Tiwa West, Kwarbibirem, Lower West Akim, Denkyembour, Lower West Akyem, and Fanteakwa South, targeting areas notorious for illegal mining.

Awatey expressed particular concern about the impact of mining activities on the environment, children, and the growing scarcity of clean water. The task force comprises personnel from the military, police, and environmental protection agencies.

More districts are expected to be covered in the coming weeks as the operation intensifies. Several arrests have been made, and excavators, guns, and other equipment have been seized.
