Children’s Day: 10-year-old serves as lawmaker in Cross River

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – As part of this year’s Children’s Day celebration, a 10-year-old girl, Treasure Ikpi Eyong, has served as the 24-hour Member representing Yakurr 1 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly.

Hon. Eyong, in a heartfelt message, expressed her gratitude for the rare opportunity to experience legislative leadership, noting it as an honour to represent the good people of Yakurr 1, even if just for a day.

“Children are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are dreamers, doers, and voices of hope,” she said, calling for concerted efforts to support every child with access to quality education, healthcare, and love.

She appreciated the incumbent lawmaker, Hon. Cyril James Omini, for his initiative and support in making the day a memorable one for children in the constituency.

“I am sincerely grateful to our substantive Honourable Member, Hon. Cyril James Omini, for making this day so special and for giving children like me a chance to experience leadership first-hand,” she said.

Hon. Eyong used the occasion to urge leaders and governments at all levels to prioritise the welfare and education of children across communities.

“Today, she leads with imagination, while we follow with action,” he said.

Children’s Day is marked annually on 27th May in Nigeria to celebrate and advocate for the rights, development, and well-being of children.
