Civil Defence rescues 618 passengers of Abuja train wreck

By Joe Udo

ABUJA (CONVERSEER) – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has carried out a clearance operation following the derailment of a Kaduna-bound passenger train, rescuing all 618 passengers on board.

The incident occurred at kilometre 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor.

The NSCDC Commandant General (CG), Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, confirmed the operation, stating that the Corps promptly deployed a tactical team of officers to the scene to ensure passenger safety and protect critical national assets.

Audi, who visited the derailment site alongside other security stakeholders, emphasised the Corps’ mandate to safeguard critical national infrastructure and provide emergency response during disasters. He assured that the NSCDC remains committed to securing vital assets, including railway installations, against sabotage.

“The Corps is fully committed to ensuring the protection of all the nation’s critical national assets and infrastructure, civilian protection through rescue operations during emergencies and disaster management, amongst others,” the CG said.

While commending the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) for its quick response, Audi praised the Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, for his efforts in managing the situation. He also called for measures to strengthen safety along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor to prevent future accidents.

The NSCDC further warned that anyone found attempting to sabotage the nation’s railway infrastructure would be brought to justice.
