The Federal House of Representatives has initiated an inquiry into the purported certificate racketeering activities of some Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies over their alleged involvement with Nigerian students.
Remember how Umar Audu, a correspondent for DAILY NIGERIAN, completed the National Youth Service Corps programme requirement after graduating from a university in Cotonou, Benin Republic, in six weeks in December 2022?
Mr Audu then went on to accuse anonymous Ministry of Education officials of being part of the racketeering syndicate; this incident drew significant criticism from well-meaning Nigerians.
The Joint Committee on Certificate Racketeering Chairman, Abubakar Fulata, led the debate on the resolution and urged the House to “identify officials of MDAs and students who benefited from such institutions and their campuses in the last ten years.”

While in Abuja, Fulata promised to address this threat within the tertiary institutions.
According to him, if certificate racketeering is permitted to go unchecked, it might severely damage the healthcare system and other economic sectors.
He said the House gave its Committees on Youth Development, Interior Foreign Affairs, and University Education instructions to look into the situation and provide a report.
“This has been a burning issue in both public and private institutions where there are seemingly less observance of rules, regulations, processes, quality assurance among others,” he said.
He urged MDAs and other pertinent stakeholders to work with the committee in order to accomplish the intended outcome, saying that in order to identify the underlying causes of the illegal act and give solutions, cooperation was necessary.
