KAINJI (CONVERSEER) – The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed that one of its Alpha Jets crashed on Saturday during a post-inspection functional check flight at the Kainji Air Base in Niger State. The incident occurred shortly after take-off when the aircraft developed an unexpected emergency, forcing the two pilots on board to eject.
No casualties were recorded, and both pilots safely parachuted to the ground before the jet crashed. A video obtained by The Whistler showed the aircraft engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across the crash site.
NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the malfunction emerged moments after take-off. He praised the pilots for their swift and professional response, noting that they diverted the aircraft away from populated areas before ejecting.

“Shortly after take-off, the aircraft developed an emergency, prompting the pilots to act swiftly and with remarkable composure,” Ejodame said. He added that the crew is currently undergoing routine medical evaluation.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, commended the pilots for their actions, saying their quick decisions prevented loss of life and reduced risk to civilians. He has ordered the immediate establishment of a Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the crash.
Aneke reaffirmed the service’s commitment to safety and operational efficiency, stating that the Nigerian Air Force will continue to uphold strict standards as it works to safeguard its personnel and the public.
