Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu has called for greater empowerment of women, support for vulnerable as the world cebrates the International Women’s Day.

In a statement dated March 8, signed by her, Edu said, “I joined the Mother of the Nation, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and other women of impact across the world who have touched lives, empowered women and supported the vulnerable in society to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day”.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain,” is a powerful reminder that building a just and prosperous society requires deliberate efforts to promote the rights, equality and empowerment of women and girls everywhere.

She stated that this theme, “underscores the importance of investing in women, supporting their aspirations and creating opportunities that allow them to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national and global development.

“Today, we celebrate the resilience, strength and achievements of women who continue to break barriers, uplift communities and shape a better future for generations to come”.

Across Nigeria and the world, Edu said “women, remain at the heart of social transformation, economic growth and family stability.

“As we mark this important day, we must renew our commitment to creating more opportunities for women and girls, supporting the vulnerable and ensuring that no woman is left behind.

“Empowering women is not only a moral responsibility but also a pathway to sustainable development and inclusive progress.

“I therefore join millions of voices around the world in celebrating the extraordinary contributions of women while encouraging continued collaboration to build societies where every woman and girl can thrive with dignity, opportunity and hope”.
