Meloni put to the test

The bill, which would strictly separate the careers of judges and prosecutors, is strongly opposed by Italy’s fragmented opposition.

By Our Reporter

ROME (CONVERSEER) – Italian voters will get the final say on a controversial judicial reform proposed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government, which has accused courts of left-wing political bias and blocking its efforts to fight illegal migration.

The bill, which would strictly separate the careers of judges and prosecutors, is strongly opposed by Italy’s fragmented opposition, which has accused the Meloni administration of threatening judicial independence.

The referendum is seen as a key test of sentiment ahead of the 2027 general elections, as reports suggest that voters are more likely to cast their ballots based on who they support politically rather than the complicated subject matter at hand.

Voting in the referendum is scheduled for Sunday to Monday, with results expected on Monday afternoon.
