Labour Party to hold national convention in Umuahia

By Our Reporter

UMUAHIA (CONVERSEER) – The Labour Party (LP) has announced that it will hold its national convention on April 28, 2026, in Umuahia, Abia State.

According to the party, it has already notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the schedule for its leadership congresses, from the ward level up to the state level, which will culminate in the national convention where new national party leaders will be elected.

Earlier, the LP had postponed the convention originally scheduled for April 11 and set up a 45-member committee to oversee preparations for the congresses and the national convention, to ensure that the process is conducted in an orderly and transparent manner.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the party’s interim chairman, said all the procedures being followed are in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC guidelines, and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).

The statement added that the party has drawn up a timetable for conducting leadership elections at the ward, local government, and state levels before the national convention.

According to the schedule, ward congresses will be held on April 23 nationwide, followed by local government congresses on April 24. The state congresses will take place on April 25 across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The national convention will then be held on April 28 at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia.

The party said notifying INEC of the timetable is in compliance with the provisions of Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and Section 223 of the Constitution, which require political parties to formally inform the commission about their meetings and internal elections.
