Following the widespread circulation of a viral online video exposing the dilapidated condition of a local primary school, the Ezza North Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) has indefinitely suspended the head teacher of Community Primary School (CPS) Obulechi Umubru Ohuzor.
The suspension was officially handed down via a formal letter dated May 18, 2024, signed by the Education Secretary of Ezza North LGEA, Hon. Nwonunku Francis.
Allegations of Sabotage and Misconduct
According to the official document, Mr Hyacienth’s indefinite suspension stems from allegations of “gross misconduct.” The education authority accused the head teacher of denying pupils their right to a quality education.
Furthermore, the government explicitly characterized the head teacher’s actions as an intentional effort to undermine the state administration. The letter states that the head teacher was found to be:
“…sabotaging the effort of our education loving governor of Ebonyi State, Right Hon. Builder Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.”
The Viral Video Catalyst
While the official letter cites systemic misconduct, sources confirm the disciplinary action was immediately triggered by an online content creator who visited the school grounds. The creator published a video detailing the stark and unfavorable learning conditions the pupils were experiencing.
Rather than addressing the infrastructural deficits highlighted in the footage, local educational authorities moved swiftly against the school’s leadership, viewing the public exposure as a deliberate attempt to embarrass the sitting governor and his administration’s educational policies.
Immediate Handover Ordered
The Ezza North Local Government Education Authority has directed Mr. Hyacienth to vacate his post immediately.
“You are to hand over all the school properties under your possession to the next in rank with immediate effect and submit the copy of the hand over note to the office of the Education Secretary,” the directive reads.
Civil society groups and education advocates within Ebonyi State are watching the development closely, with many raising concerns over whether the suspension targets systemic failure or merely penalizes whistleblower exposure.
