BREAKING: Former South African President Mbeki Cancels Nigeria Trip After Sister’s Death, Event Postponed

The postponement was announced in a letter sent to invitees by the President and CEO of the Amandla Institute, Prof Adebayo Olukoshi, on Monday.

A proposed fireside chat scheduled to hold on June 15 has been postponed indefinitely following the death of Dr Fezeka Mabona, the younger sister of former South African President, Thabo Mbeki.

The postponement was announced in a letter sent to invitees by the President and CEO of the Amandla Institute, Prof Adebayo Olukoshi, on Monday.

According to the letter, Mbeki, who was expected to serve as the keynote speaker at the event, suffered a personal bereavement over the weekend and subsequently cancelled his planned trip to Nigeria.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the indefinite postponement of the proposed fireside chat scheduled for 15th June,” Olukoshi said.

He explained that the decision became necessary after Mbeki’s loss.

“Over the weekend, our keynote speaker, His Excellency, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, suffered a personal bereavement following the loss of his younger sister and, understandably, has had to cancel his planned trip to Nigeria,” the statement read.

Olukoshi apologised for any inconvenience the postponement may cause participants and other stakeholders.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding at this difficult time,” he said.

He also called on supporters and well-wishers to remember the former South African leader and his family in their prayers.

“Kindly join us in keeping President Mbeki and his immediate family in your thoughts and prayers,” the letter added.

No new date has been announced for the event.
