An Enugu-based journalist and former House of Representatives candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Ani, has accused operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Enugu State of allegedly tracking him and posing a threat to his safety.
Ani made the allegation in a statement issued on Saturday, June 13, 2026, in which he claimed that police operatives had intensified efforts to locate him despite, according to him, the absence of any known criminal allegation against him.
Ani said he received information from credible sources indicating that officers attached to the Enugu State Anti-Kidnapping Command had been making inquiries about his whereabouts.
According to him, his fears escalated after one of his associates repeatedly contacted him seeking details of his exact location, a development he said prompted him to investigate further.
Ani alleged that some of his associates were arrested and questioned by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit over information concerning his whereabouts.
“In the course of my investigation, I was informed that some of my associates had allegedly been arrested and interrogated by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit regarding my whereabouts,” he said.
He further alleged that one of the associates later informed him that the search for him had gone beyond routine inquiries.
The former ADC House of Representatives candidate also alleged that security operatives received intelligence suggesting that he intended to travel to Abuja through the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and subsequently deployed personnel to monitor the airport with the aim of intercepting him.
“I was further informed that security operatives allegedly received information suggesting that I intended to travel to Abuja through the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and subsequently deployed personnel to monitor the airport in an attempt to intercept me,” he stated.
Ani maintained that he had committed no offence and described himself as a law-abiding citizen engaged in journalism, security analysis, entrepreneurship and public advocacy.
“As a law-abiding Nigerian citizen, journalist, security analyst, entrepreneur, and founder of Glintnews, I find these developments deeply troubling. I have committed no crime known to the law,” he said.
He said that he attempted to contact the Commander of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, SP Chukwu Odum, to determine whether there was any official investigation involving him, but claimed that his efforts did not produce any meaningful response.
Ani said he remained willing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies if there were legitimate concerns regarding his activities.
“Let me state clearly: if the Nigeria Police Force has any legitimate concerns regarding me, my activities, or any information they believe I can assist with, I remain fully available and willing to cooperate.
“The police have the constitutional powers to issue an official invitation, and I will honour such an invitation without hesitation,” he said.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, security agencies, human rights organisations, civil society groups and the media to investigate the matter and ensure adherence to due process and the rule of law.
