A viral image showing Bello Turji wearing what appears to be an advanced military helmet equipped with Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) has generated widespread reactions across social media platforms.
The image was initially shared by X user Adam Muhammad Mukhtar (@EngineerAdam123) before spreading across Facebook, Instagram and other platforms. The accompanying caption identified the equipment as LIT Gen2+ High-Visibility Head-Mounted Night Vision Goggles, claiming the device costs about $2,500 (roughly ₦4 million).
Part of the caption reads:
“The device mounted on Bello Turji’s helmet is known as Night Vision Goggles (NVG). It is attached to a tactical helmet and allows security personnel to see in very low light or complete darkness without relying on bright flashlights.”
It further claimed:
“Its main advantage is that it enables users to move and operate effectively at night while reducing the chances of being detected. NVGs are commonly used for border surveillance, nighttime patrols, and monitoring the movement of people or vehicles in dark environments.”
At the time of this fact-check, the post had attracted thousands of engagements, including more than 8,000 likes, dozens of comments, reposts and bookmarks, with many users accepting the claim as genuine.
The claim as of the time of making this report, had garnered momentum online, with 8,120 likes, over 68 likes, 13 bookmarks and 6 reshares and 1 quote.
A visit to the comment section showed that some people believed the narrative to be true.
For example, Sa’lasi @Ya_ssb wrote: “Comment section asking how did he obtain it? It’s not hard, the black market in North Africa is easily accessible and cheap to obtain these things, which are mostly Russian made.”
Similarly, Kabir MuhammadKafur said: “Ransom is making them richer than military, something that DHQ can’t afford for its personnel.”
Ibrahim Zulkiful wrote: “Like there’s nothing you will tell me that this people doesn’t have support deep down from the people in power. How do they lay thier hands on this sophisticated instruments, like no way.”
Given the growing circulation of the claim and its potential to misinform the public, this reporter investigated.
Verification
We subjected the viral image to multiple AI forensic detection tools to determine whether it had been digitally manipulated. The analysis established that the original photograph of Bello Turji was authentic but that the military helmet and attached Night Vision Goggles had been artificially generated.
An assessment conducted using ImageWhisperer found that the image recorded a Generation score of 6/7, indicating that six of the seven AI detection models cleared the original photograph while one model remained inconclusive.
Under the Editing Check, the tool returned 1/2 clear and 1 flagged (Sparse-ViT), meaning only one editing detector identified signs of manipulation, which fell below the threshold required to classify the entire image as AI-generated.
The Source Check further found no camera metadata or web history, indicating that the edited version of the image lacked verifiable source information.
The forensic models underlying the assessment produced varying results. Commercial Scanner returned 0% AI probability, while SPAI recorded 0% and CommFor returned 0%, indicating that the original photograph itself did not exhibit characteristics of a fully AI-generated image.
Taken together, these findings suggest that although the base image is authentic, portions of it—particularly the military helmet and the attached Night Vision Goggles, were digitally manipulated using artificial intelligence.
To further verify the claim, we analysed the image using MyAIFactChecker, which found no verifiable evidence that Bello Turji had purchased or was in possession of the LIT Gen2+ High-Visibility Head-Mounted Night Vision Goggles shown in the viral post.
This reporter also reviewed reports from credible news organisations, official security sources and other publicly available records to determine whether any reliable evidence existed to support the claim that Bello Turji had acquired the military-grade equipment.
The investigation found no credible report confirming that the bandit leader possesses the Night Vision Goggles depicted in the viral image.
Conclusion
The claim that Bello Turji has acquired and is wearing LIT Gen2+ High-Visibility Head-Mounted Night Vision Goggles worth about $2,500 (approximately ₦4 million) is misleading.
Investigation revealed that although the original photograph of Bello Turji is genuine, the military helmet and attached Night Vision Goggles were artificially generated and inserted into the image using AI. Furthermore, no credible evidence supports the claim that the bandit leader possesses the military-grade equipment portrayed in the viral post.
