Heartland Queens will renew their rivalry with fellow Nigeria Women Football League side FC Robo Queens when both teams square off in Wednesday’s President Federation Cup semi-final at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.
The highly anticipated encounter marks only the second meeting between the two top-flight sides in Nigeria’s oldest and most prestigious domestic cup competition. Their first and only Federation Cup clash came in the 2024 edition, when the Lagos-based outfit secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over the Owerri side in a Round of 16 fixture played in Asaba, Delta State.
Both teams booked their places in the last four through hard-fought quarter-final victories. Heartland Queens overcame Ibom Angels 4-2 in a penalty shootout after regulation time ended 2-2 in Aba, Abia State. FC Robo Queens, meanwhile, edged defending champions Rivers Angels 1-0 in Benin City to set up the blockbuster semi-final showdown.
For Heartland Queens, reaching the semi-finals represents a significant milestone. The Owerri-based club had repeatedly fallen short of surpassing their previous quarter-final best in the competition. However, their persistence has finally paid dividends this season, and the team now has its sights firmly set on securing a place in the final and mounting a serious challenge for the coveted trophy.
Hartland Queens head coach Obi Ogbala is fully aware of the threat posed by the Lagos side. FC Robo Queens have built a reputation as one of the most formidable teams in the women’s game, and Ogbala is expected to field his strongest available squad in a bid to neutralise their challenge. The tactician is unlikely to make major alterations to the lineup that delivered the impressive result against Ibom Angels in the quarter-finals, with confidence high within the camp ahead of the crucial tie.
On the opposing bench, FC Robo Queens manager Emmanuel Osahon, popularly known as “The Oracle,” arrives with a reputation for excellence and tactical ingenuity. Osahon’s wealth of experience and winning mentality are expected to provide Ogbala with one of the sternest managerial tests of his career.
The winner of Wednesday’s semi-final clash will advance to the grand finale, where they will face either Sunshine Queens or Nasarawa Amazons. The championship match is scheduled to take place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, on Saturday, July 11.
