The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is set for a historic financial transformation beginning from the 2026/27 season, following the approval of a record N1 billion cash reward for the league champions.

The groundbreaking prize package received the backing of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) during a high-level meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the newly adopted payment structure, the runners-up will take home N500 million, while the team that finishes third will be awarded N300 million. The champions will receive the headline prize of N1 billion, making it the most lucrative reward system ever introduced in the league.

The initiative is widely regarded as a major milestone in the development of Nigerian domestic football, reflecting the commitment of football stakeholders to improve the league’s attractiveness and competitiveness.

The enhanced prize money is expected to encourage greater investment in clubs, improve player welfare, and raise the overall quality of competition across the NPFL.

Football administrators believe the move will also strengthen the commercial appeal of the league and create a more sustainable environment for clubs competing in Nigeria’s top division.

The new reward system represents the largest prize fund ever introduced in the history of the NPFL and is expected to take effect from the commencement of the 2026/27 season.

Additional details regarding the implementation and operational framework of the prize structure are expected to be released by the relevant authorities in due course.
