Major Gaming Company To Stop Releasing Physical Discs

Sony’s PlayStation discontinued disc production claiming a shift in consumer preferences toward digital formats — upsetting some gamers.

Games released after January 2028 will be available only on PlayStation Store, according to the PlayStation blog.

This follows another announcement of the closure of the PlayStation store on PS3 and PS Vita. New content will not be able to be purchasable on these devices, according to a PlayStation blog post.

PlayStation did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

PlayStation’s parent company Sony Interactive Entertainment wants to adapt to alleged consumer trends that make discs outdated and inefficient.

“We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store,” Sid Shuman, Senior Director, said in the blog post.

“We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support,” Shuman continued.

“You are killing ownership. You are killing legal preservation. You are killing discoverability. You are killing publishers. You are killing developers,” an X account with more than 40,000 followers replied to PlayStation’s post announcing the changes.

“This is a move that might slightly improve bottom lines, but tear down every other aspect of this medium. Well done! You f*d up!” the reply concluded.
