World Cup: England takes decision on sacking Thomas Tuchel

Reading Time: 2 mins read

The Football Association, FA, has made a decision regarding the future of England manager, Thomas Tuchel, contingent upon the outcome of their match against Mexico in the World Cup round of 16.

Following a tense victory over DR Congo, England now confronts the formidable challenge of facing co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in the early hours of Monday morning.

Were the match to take place elsewhere, the Three Lions would likely be favoured; however, Mexico’s remarkable home record, coupled with the challenges posed by high altitude, gives El Tri the upper hand.

Additionally, Tuchel’s squad has not performed at their peak during this tournament, coming perilously close to elimination against the underdogs DR Congo before being saved by captain Harry Kane just 15 minutes from defeat.

The 52-year-old was appointed as Sir Gareth Southgate’s successor with the explicit aim of securing victory in this tournament, and as a result, speculation regarding his future is intensifying.

Just prior to the World Cup, the German extended his contract to include Euro 2028, which England will co-host with Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland.

Nevertheless, his contract includes performance clauses that permit the FA to terminate his employment without incurring significant compensation if specific targets are not achieved.

An exit in the round of 16 would represent England’s poorest showing at a major tournament since Roy Hodgson’s squad suffered a humiliating defeat to Iceland at the European Championships a decade ago.

According to The Telegraph, Tuchel would almost certainly have faced dismissal had the Three Lions lost to DR Congo, but he is expected to remain in his position regardless of the outcome in Mexico City.

The FA will consider the challenges posed by the draw when evaluating the manager’s performance at the conclusion of the tournament, whenever that may be; however, barring a catastrophic result, the intention is to retain him as manager.

Should England manage to defeat the co-hosts, their anticipated route to success would involve facing Brazil, Argentina, and France. A loss to any of these teams will not alter the plan either.

The FA’s decision will also be influenced by the mood in the England camp, which is said to be very positive despite recent performances and Tuchel’s demanding style of management.

The German, who won the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea, had been linked with a return to club football after the World Cup, but with most high-profile jobs no longer up for grabs, his head is not expected to be turned.
