Lagos women’s team secures first slot at National Women’s Cricket Championship final

In a thrilling showdown at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Cricket Oval, the Lagos State women’s team clinched the first slot to represent the South-West zone at the National Women’s Championship final slated for November.

The tournament, which has seen fierce competition among various regions, witnessed Lagos State emerge victorious in a nail-biting encounter against Ekiti State.

The final match of the tournament played between Ekiti State and Lagos State, was nothing short of intense. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Ekiti State aimed to set a formidable target for their opponents. However, their hopes were dashed as they were bowled out for 52 runs in just 15.4 overs, facing fierce opposition from the Lagos State bowling attack.

Undeterred by the modest target, Lagos State’s women’s team approached the chase with determination and resolve. Despite losing wickets early on, they managed to maintain composure and steadily chase down the required runs. In a display of grit and skill, Lagos State secured victory, reaching the target in just 8.6 overs with 4 wickets in hand.

As the dust settled on the field, attention turned to the award presentation ceremony, where standout performers were recognised for their contributions to their team’s success. Kehinde Abdul Quadri (Lagos State ) was honoured as the Best Fielder, showcasing exceptional athleticism and agility throughout the tournament. Ekundayo Olayinka’s (Ekiti State) stellar bowling performances earned her the title of Best Bowler, with her ability to consistently trouble opposing batsmen. The coveted title of Best Batter and Most Valuable Player (MVP) was awarded to Olukayode Ayomiposi (Ekiti State).

With their impressive display of talent and teamwork, Lagos State’s women’s team has set the stage for an exciting showdown in the upcoming National Women’s Championship final. As other regions gear up for their zonal elimination matches scheduled for May 22nd to 25th, anticipation is high for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the Championship.
