Fresh pressure is mounting on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, to order an immediate investigation into CSP Abdulmajeed Abisoye Oyewumi following the emergence of a video that shows the senior police officer celebrating his birthday with Chinese nationals currently standing trial over alleged illegal mining offences.
The video, obtained by SaharaReporters, shows Oyewumi seated at a table surrounded by Chinese nationals, with an array of dishes and a cake before him. As they sang “Happy Birthday to You,” he leaned forward and blew out the candles on the cake.
The video has triggered widespread concern, with anti-corruption advocates and stakeholders demanding an urgent probe into an alleged improper relationship between the officer and the Chinese defendants.

Those raising the alarm alleged that Oyewumi’s meeting with the Chinese nationals must have featured discussions centred on plans capable of compromising the ongoing criminal prosecution.
The latest controversy comes days after SaharaReporters exclusively reported that operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals arrested Oyewumi over allegations that he helped Chinese nationals standing trial for alleged illegal mining offences evade justice.
According to the Mining Marshals, the Chinese defendants are facing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja in Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/131/2025 over alleged illegal mining activities in Nasarawa State.
The agency alleged that after the court revoked the suspects’ bail and issued bench warrants following their repeated failure to appear for trial, intelligence indicated that Oyewumi and other police officers facilitated the escape of two of the defendants through the Nigeria-Cameroon border and were allegedly making arrangements to help another suspect flee.
The Mining Marshals further alleged that the officer was found at an apartment in Abuja alongside one of the Chinese defendants and other suspected accomplices during a follow-up operation.
The agency also claimed criminal charges had been filed against CSP Oyewumi and others over the alleged obstruction of justice.
The emergence of the new video has further intensified calls for the Inspector-General of Police to order an independent, transparent and forensic investigation into the allegations and determine whether any police regulations or criminal laws were violated.
That development intensified concerns over the officer’s alleged links with the foreign nationals and prompted renewed calls for a thorough investigation into the nature of the relationship.
Stakeholders argued that if the allegations surrounding the newly surfaced video are established through investigation, they would amount to a serious breach of public trust and could undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
According to them, the Nigerian government’s ongoing campaign against illegal mining depends heavily on the credibility of law enforcement agencies and the successful prosecution of suspects accused of exploiting the country’s mineral resources outside the law.
They warned that any attempt to interfere with such prosecutions could weaken efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the mining sector while eroding public confidence in the administration of justice.
The concerned stakeholders are therefore urging the IGP to immediately order a forensic examination of the video, identify every individual captured in the footage, determine the circumstances under which the meeting allegedly took place, establish the nature of the interaction between the police officer and the defendants, and ascertain whether any police regulations or criminal laws were violated.
They further insisted that the investigation must be transparent, independent and free from political or institutional interference, stressing that allegations involving senior police officers should be subjected to the highest level of scrutiny to preserve public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
