The Mike Uma-Okoro Basketball Foundation has successfully staged the 12th edition of its annual basketball camp, with participants describing the programme as a life-changing experience that has equipped them with valuable lessons on discipline, confidence and consistency both on and off the court.
Held for the 12th consecutive year at the Warriors Courts, Ilupeju, the camp brought together young basketball enthusiasts for intensive training, mentorship and personal development sessions aimed at nurturing the next generation of players.
One of the participants, A participantVictor Omeza, said he joined the camp after receiving a recommendation from his coach, adding that the experience had transformed his approach to basketball and life.
“I learned to be confident, disciplined and consistent. When you set goals, you don’t have to rely on motivation because motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what helps you keep going,” Omeza said.
He noted that the knowledge gained during the camp would positively influence his performance on the court as well as his daily life.
, while urging other young players to remain committed to developing their skills through hard work and discipline.
Speaking at the event, founder of the programme Mike Uma-Okoro, a former national and Warriors Basketball alumni said the 12th edition recorded encouraging participation despite challenging weather conditions.
He disclosed that about 120 participants received jerseys during the programme and expressed satisfaction with the quality and commitment of the young players in attendance.
According to the camp coordinator, Kenneth Ezirim several returning participants showed remarkable improvement from previous editions, highlighting the impact of the annual camp on youth basketball development.
He noted that the increasing number of participants each year is a strong indication that basketball continues to grow in popularity across Nigeria.
Former D’Tigress captain, Shola Shomala noted that she is hopeful that with more camps like that of Mike Uma-Okoro, there is hope for development of local basketball and young talents.
Another former basketball player, Chris Imotsikeme told Daily Sun Sports that he is impressed and motivated by the number of kids at the camp and their commitment to the game. He said he is looking forward to running a camp of his own to also give back to society.
“The Warriors Basketball court is our base and we must do something to show love to our younger ones. We tell the kids that as former players that started here and have it it in life, they too can make it,” the Canada based basketball star noted.
