A wave of grief has enveloped Sokoto State following the tragic death of nine young men from Yabo Local Government Area, who lost their lives in a fatal road accident while travelling to Lagos in search of economic opportunities and a brighter future.
The heartbreaking incident has drawn widespread sympathy across the state and beyond, with many describing it as a painful reminder of the harsh realities confronting thousands of Nigerian youths compelled to leave their communities in pursuit of livelihoods.
Reacting to the tragedy, the member representing Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Umar Yusuf Danmaje Yabo, expressed profound sorrow over the loss, describing the victims as promising young men whose aspirations were cruelly cut short.
In a condolence message made available to journalists in Sokoto on Saturday, the lawmaker said the accident had plunged families, friends and the entire Yabo community into deep mourning.
“It is with a heavy heart that I received the devastating news of the road accident that claimed the lives of nine young men from Yabo,” Danmaje said.
According to him, the deceased embarked on the journey with legitimate hopes of improving their lives and supporting their families, only for their dreams to be shattered by the tragic incident.
“This painful occurrence is a monumental loss, not only to the bereaved families but also to our constituency, Sokoto State and the nation at large. These were young men with dreams, ambitions and the determination to build a better future for themselves and their loved ones,” he stated.
The lawmaker noted that the deaths represent more than a personal tragedy for the affected families, stressing that the nation has also lost energetic and productive youths who could have contributed meaningfully to economic and social development.
He lamented that many young Nigerians continue to undertake long and difficult journeys across the country in search of employment and better living conditions due to limited opportunities in their local communities.
“Their untimely death while pursuing lawful means of livelihood is deeply painful. The entire community is mourning because we have lost a generation of hardworking and promising young people,” Danmaje added.
He further observed that the tragedy has left an emotional scar on Yabo and the wider Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency, noting that no words could adequately ease the pain of the bereaved families.
On behalf of the people of the constituency, the federal lawmaker extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, traditional leaders, community stakeholders and residents of Yabo Local Government Area.
He prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the departed souls and grant them eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
“I pray that Almighty Allah (SWT) grants the departed souls eternal peace, comforts their families and gives them the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
Danmaje also called on relevant authorities, including road safety agencies, to strengthen measures aimed at reducing the alarming rate of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways, stressing that countless families continue to suffer avoidable losses each year.
He further advocated greater investment in youth empowerment programmes, skills acquisition initiatives and job creation schemes across the country, arguing that expanding economic opportunities closer to home would help reduce the pressure on young people to embark on risky long-distance journeys in search of work.
The tragedy has reignited national conversations on youth unemployment, internal migration and road safety, with many Nigerians mourning the loss of nine young men whose journey of hope ended in sorrow. As condolences continue to pour in, Yabo remains united in grief, struggling to come to terms with the painful reality that nine of its sons left home seeking a better future but never returned.
