A Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard University graduate, Yinka Ogunbiyi, is making waves in the beauty technology industry with the development of HaloBraid, a groundbreaking robotic system designed to assist professional hairstylists by automating the most repetitive stage of the braiding process.
The innovation, described as the world’s first braid-assist robot, has already attracted significant investor confidence, raising $7 million in seed funding while recording more than 7,000 professional salons on its waiting list ahead of its commercial launch.
Announcing the milestone on Friday, the United States Mission in Nigeria highlighted the global impact of the innovation in a post on X.
“Nigerian-American engineer & Harvard grad Yinka Ogunbiyi built HaloBraid, the world’s first braid-assist robot, easing strain on stylists & saving salons time.
“$7M raised, 7,000+ salons waitlisted. American innovation, global impact. #AmericanExcellence in action,” the mission wrote.
The funding round was led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm established by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, with additional backing from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital. The investment is expected to accelerate the commercial rollout of HaloBraid as demand from salons continues to grow.
Ogunbiyi, who holds a joint Master of Science and Master of Business Administration from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Harvard Business School, previously built her career developing connected smart-home appliances and consumer electronic products before turning her attention to the beauty industry.
The inspiration for HaloBraid came during the COVID-19 pandemic after she spent four days installing knotless braids on herself. The experience exposed the physical demands and lengthy process involved in professional braiding, prompting her to explore how robotics could simplify one of the industry’s most labour-intensive tasks.
She later partnered with co-founder David Afolabi to transform the idea into a patented mechanical technology capable of assisting, rather than replacing, professional hairstylists.
The robotic assistant focuses on the repetitive mid-length braiding stage, which consumes a significant portion of a typical salon appointment. Under the process, the stylist still performs the creative and technical aspects of the hairstyle by parting the client’s hair, sectioning it and creating the initial anchor knot manually.
Once that stage is completed, the HaloBraid device takes over the repetitive braiding sequence before the stylist resumes work to finish, trim and seal the hairstyle according to the client’s preference.
Responding to concerns that introducing robotics into African heritage hairstyling could diminish its cultural significance, Ogunbiyi dismissed such fears, insisting that the technology was designed to complement, not replace, the stylist’s expertise.
“I don’t think anything will get lost from the experience.
“If anything, it enriches it. Technology simply assists with the repetitive movements that consume the most time and place the greatest strain on the body.”
Beyond reducing appointment times, HaloBraid is also intended to tackle the long-term physical stress associated with professional braiding. Hairstylists often endure repetitive movements involving the hands, wrists, shoulders and back, leading to fatigue and occupational injuries over time.
By automating the most physically demanding aspect of the process, the technology is expected to enable stylists to serve more clients, improve salon productivity and extend their professional careers.
Its development comes at a time when demand for protective hairstyles continues to increase worldwide. Industry research cited by the company indicates that nearly 95 per cent of surveyed Black women would choose protective hairstyles more frequently if salon appointments were less exhausting and less time-consuming.
With fresh funding secured and thousands of salons already expressing interest, HaloBraid is now preparing for full commercial deployment, positioning Ogunbiyi’s innovation as one of the most significant technological advancements in the global beauty industry.
