Wike Vows Crackdown On Illegal Car Racing In Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to clamp down on illegal car racing in residential areas across Abuja, warning that the activity endangers residents and other road users.

Speaking with journalists on Monday during an inspection of ongoing projects in the FCT, Wike said the administration would not allow motorists and thrill-seekers to turn newly constructed roads into racing tracks.

He said while the roads had improved movement across the capital, they had also encouraged reckless driving in some residential neighbourhoods.

“First of all, they are trying to show how beautiful the roads are, but then they forget there are aspects of it that also pose danger to innocent citizens.

“I appeal to them to understand that their rights have limitations, and life is more important,” the minister said.

Responding to reports of organised street racing and dangerous driving in residential estates, Wike said the FCT Administration would not tolerate activities that put lives at risk.

Although he said the administration had yet to receive any formal petition identifying the affected locations, Wike assured residents that action would be taken through its enforcement agencies.

He said the FCT Traffic Management Department would be directed to enforce compliance and ensure residential roads are not used for high-speed racing.

Wike said those interested in motorsports should restrict such activities to designated racing facilities or other approved non-residential locations.

“Rest assured that we will do everything possible to see that we don’t allow car racing within residential areas.

“But if it is on the highway, well, that we will not stop,” he said.

The minister added that the FCT Administration would work with law enforcement and traffic authorities to step up patrols and monitor areas identified as hotspots for illegal street racing.
