Akwa Ibom state government has blamed members of the taskforce on illegal motorcycle operators in Uyo metropolis over a ghastly accident which may result in amputation of a young man identified as Chinoso Amechi from Agwu community in Enugu state .
Daily Sun gathered that Amechi was accosted and chased by the taskforce on motorcycle operators plying major streets in Uyo as operations of motorcycles within the city was banned by the state government many years ago
Eyewitness Mr Chris Nweke Kosi who spoke with our Reporter in Uyo disclosed that Amechi’s leg was crushed by the taskforce as he was waiting for passengers near Ibom Specialist Hospital far from Uyo main town.
Kosi said the taskforce from Ministry of Transport on sighting Amechi drove closer and dragged him into their moving vehicle and scattered his leg leaving him in a pool of his blood .
” He screamed for help but the taskforce sped off having inflicted wounds and broke his leg .
” Some good Samaritans pick him up to the hospital for treatment while the taskforce members ran away
“As it is now , he may die out of excessive bleeding but if God save his life , he maybe amputated because his leg is completely cut off
” Doctors are now battling on how to treat the wounds before they can treat the broken leg”
Kosi said the incident attracted large crowd who besieged the hospital premises including to sympathized with the young man whose means of livelihood depends on riding the motorcycle in the city .
He said the incident was so pathetic that the Commissioner for Transport Dr Anthony Luke visited the hospital and presented cash of two thousand naira (N200,000) for doctors to commence treatment.
Kosi disclosed that the Transport Commissioner while reacting on the incident condemned the attitude of the taskforce as the location where motorcycle operator was waiting for passengers is not part of Uyo city where their operations were banned .
According to the Commissioner for Transport , the area is not included within the work scope of the taskforce .
” I blame the taskforce . This area is a suburban and not where the ‘okda’ riders have been banned ”
