Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya’s election as the first democratically elected female president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is more than a personal triumph. It is a watershed in the history of Africa’s largest association of lawyers and a defining moment for Nigeria’s justice sector.
Her emergence comes at a period when public confidence in the judiciary has been severely eroded by conflicting court decisions, prolonged delays in the administration of justice, allegations of declining ethical standards and the perception that the Bench and the Bar are no longer as fearless as they once were in defending constitutional democracy.
Although Priscilla Kuye made history as the NBA’s first female president in 1991, Badejo-Okusanya becomes the first woman to attain the office through a direct electoral mandate. That distinction carries enormous symbolic and moral significance. Her victory has raised expectations that she will restore the NBA to its traditional position as the conscience of the nation and an uncompromising defender of the rule of law, human rights and constitutionalism.
The task before her is daunting. She inherits a Bar divided by a fiercely contested election and confronted by growing concerns over judicial independence and the weakening public perception of the legal profession. Beyond reconciling competing interests within the association, she must rebuild confidence in an institution that once stood boldly between arbitrary power and the ordinary citizen.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in congratulating the president-elect, acknowledged her distinguished career, marked by integrity, professionalism and commitment to justice. He described her emergence as recognition of the invaluable contributions of women to nation-building and expressed confidence that her leadership would strengthen the legal profession through reforms that enhance access to justice. The President also urged her to work with stakeholders to advance judicial reforms, protect the sanctity of the Constitution and sustain the legal profession’s role as a pillar of democracy. He further assured her of his administration’s commitment to working with the NBA to deepen democratic governance, promote justice and build a more united Nigeria.
Those assurances are reassuring. Yet they also invite a more fundamental question. Given persistent allegations by critics that the present administration exerts undue influence over judicial processes and institutions, will Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya be allowed the professional independence to live out the integrity and courage for which she is widely respected? Can she lead an NBA that speaks truth to power without fear or favour? Will the Bar reclaim its historic voice whenever constitutional principles are threatened, regardless of where such threats originate?
These are not questions for the new president alone. They are questions for the government, the judiciary, the legal profession and indeed the Nigerian people.
History remembers NBA presidents such as Alao Aka-Bashorun, Olisa Agbakoba, Wole Olanipekun and Rotimi Akeredolu for their willingness to confront injustice and defend democratic values. Their legacy reminds the profession that silence in the face of constitutional abuse is never neutrality; it is acquiescence.
All eyes are now on Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya to see whether she will truly fly where eagles dare. Her tenure offers an opportunity not merely to make history as the first elected female president of the NBA, but to redefine leadership at a time when Nigeria desperately needs courageous voices.
For no democracy can flourish with a weak Bar or a compromised Bench. The health of the republic depends on both institutions remaining independent, fearless and faithful to the Constitution. Only a strong Bar and a strong Bench can guarantee the virility, not the sterility, of Nigeria’s democracy.
