The Foundation for Democracy in Africa (FDA) has congratulated the Nigerian Army on its recognition as Africa’s Best National Army in Counter-Terrorism Operations for 2025.
The group said the award, presented by African Security Watch at a ceremony in Banjul, The Gambia, reflected the Army’s efforts in tackling terrorism and other security challenges across the country.
In a statement, the Foundation linked the recognition to the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, describing the award as an endorsement of the Army’s current operational strategy.
According to the group, Shaibu’s command philosophy, known as PROSE, was introduced in February 2026 to strengthen professionalism, operational readiness and leadership within the Nigerian Army.
The Foundation said the doctrine had contributed to improved troop morale, enhanced operational effectiveness and greater collaboration with other security agencies.
It also cited what it described as increased successes in counter-terrorism operations, including the rescue of kidnap victims, disruption of terrorist activities and dismantling of criminal networks.
Speaking on the development, a representative of the Foundation, Hassan Mohammed, described the award as recognition of the sacrifices and commitment of Nigerian troops in the fight against insurgency and terrorism.
He commended the Army leadership for what he called efforts to improve the force’s operational capabilities and professionalism.
The Foundation also praised the Chief of Army Staff for dedicating the award to soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty and to their families, describing the gesture as a demonstration of concern for personnel.
The award was formally presented to the Chief of Army Staff at the Army Headquarters in Abuja by Major General Tariweriye Gagariga after it was received in Banjul.
The Foundation urged the Nigerian Army to sustain its ongoing operations against insecurity through intelligence-driven strategies and stronger cooperation with other security agencies and stakeholders.
