Muslim gangs force white prisoners to convert to Islam
One in five followers of the faith in jail is Caucasian, nearly four times the rate in general population

Ministers have been urged to investigate a surge in white prisoners being forced to convert to Islam by Muslim gangs.
Ministry of Justice (MoJ) data show that one in five Muslims in prisons in England and Wales is white, nearly four times the rate of 5.8% in the general population.
The number of Muslim prisoners in jails in England and Wales has also increased and accounts for nearly one in five (18%) of the prison population, despite making up 6.5% of the general population. …
It follows reports by government advisers highlighting concerns that gangs in some jails are ordering prisoners to convert to Islam or face violence.
“The percentage of Muslims who are white in our prisons is so vastly higher than in the general population it raises serious questions,” said Mr Timothy.
“We know that experts have warned repeatedly about forced conversions taking place behind bars, driven by Islamic gangs. …
Jonathan Hall KC, the Government’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said he found evidence in his report of Islamist terrorists acting as “self-styled emirs” controlling prisoners through “leadership and recruitment”.
This included recruitment of “vulnerable or lonely prisoners, using guidance, sharing of food or material gifts” and “conversion backed by implicit or actual violence”, he said. …
According to the latest MoJ data, there are more Muslim chaplains in prisons in England and Wales than there are Anglican or Church of England chaplains.
The number of Muslim chaplains in prisons is now 140, up from 128 in 2023–24, compared with 87 for the Church of England, down from 97 in 2024–25. There are an additional 94 Catholic chaplains, 64 from free churches and 23 described as “Christian”.
The number of white Muslims in prison has increased from 2,767 in 2022 to 3,218 as of June 30th, 2025, an increase of 16%.
Muslim inmates in England and Wales have risen from 14,037 in 2022 to 16,051 as of June 30th, 2025, an increase of 14%.
