A minor of about 10-12 years has been allegedly raped by suspected Skolombo Boys (street children) in Calabar, Cross River State.
Converseer learned that the girl was found weak, lying on the street along Eta Agbor Layout after the alleged act, and was taken to a medical centre by a good Samaritan, but was rejected.
“She was found today (September 4), abandoned at Eta Agbor Layout. Feeling very weak and unable to talk, a case of hunger was suspected, and Sprite with bread were bought for her.
“After eating, she gathered a little energy and revealed that she was raped by 3 Skolombo Boys around CUDA,” Ini Imah shared on Facebook on Friday.
Imah further claimed, “She was then taken by a good Nigerian to UCTH (sic), where she got food, injection and medication. UCTH (sic) reportedly refused admitting her, demanding for Police Extract.
“The good Nigerian brought her back to the spot at Eta Agbor Layout, where she is presently sleeping.”
Converseer further learned, however, that the hospital in question is not the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) as claimed by Imah. It was the University of Calabar Medical Centre.
“Not UCTH as reported. This girl was brought to UNICAL Medical Centre, where she was given first aid treatment by a good Samaritan. She doesn’t even know her full name and who she is staying with. She looks like Skolombo too,” a reliable source, Sunny Modey, stated.
Reacting, Daniel Cobhams Williams, an aide to Governor Bassey Otu, said, “The hospital has no right to reject her. Worst-case scenario, admit her, get details of the Samaritan, contact the Childcare Department of the Nigeria Police Force and State Social Welfare Department. That’s how coordinated efforts are established in society.
“It’s time healthcare workers get arrested for rejection of patients and their licenses withdrawn.”
Converseer reports that demanding a Police Extract before rendering emergency medical care is illegal in Nigeria, as enshrined in Sections 11 &14 of the National Health Act.
