A Nigerian drug dealer, Tony Obina, has reportedly been recaptured after escaping from the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, Liberia.
Obina was among inmates who reportedly escaped from the correctional facility on Sunday, according to reports from Liberia.
West Trybe News Media also posted a video online showing Obina and another man being returned to the prison after they were reportedly found by local residents.
In the video, Obina was seen wearing only a pair of blue boxers as he was escorted back to the correctional facility.
The development came after Liberia’s Ministry of Justice confirmed that a jailbreak had occurred at the Kakata Central Prison.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 20, 2026, the ministry said: “The Ministry of Justice informs the public that a jailbreak has occurred at the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, resulting in the escape of a number of inmates from the facility.”
It said the Joint Security of Liberia had been alerted and a search and recapture operation was underway.
“Currently, Security personnel are actively searching for and pursuing the escaped inmates,” the statement said.

The ministry said the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation was also verifying prison records to establish the exact number and identities of the inmates who escaped.
“The Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation is completing the verification and reconciliation of the prison records to establish the full details surrounding the jailbreak and escape, including the confirmed number and identities of the inmates involved,” it said.
According to the ministry, the identities of the escapees would be released after the verification process to assist security authorities and members of the public in locating them.
“Once this process is concluded, the Ministry of Justice will release the names and other identification information of the inmates who escaped and are on the run to assist the public and security authorities in their recapture,” the statement added.
The ministry urged residents to remain vigilant and provide information about the whereabouts of escaped inmates to the nearest police station or other security authorities.
It, however, warned members of the public against attempting to apprehend or harbour any of the escapees.
“Members of the public are advised not to attempt to apprehend any of the escapees themselves or harbor,” the ministry said.
Obina was recently convicted by a 12-member jury at the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Margibi County in a major drug-trafficking case.
He was convicted alongside two officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, Joe Logan and Lovette Flowers, in a case involving drugs reportedly valued at about US$181,008 and more than L$63.2 million.
The reports said the men were apprehended by community members and authorities while allegedly attempting to flee following the prison escape.
The Ministry of Justice said the Joint Security would provide further information as the operation continued.
