The United States, Liberia and Saudi Arabia have congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming their commitment to ties with the country.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and is marking the anniversary today, Thursday, October 1, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Spokesman of the US Department of State, the United States congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to its relationship with Abuja.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my congratulations to the people of Nigeria on the 66th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence,” the statement said.
The US described Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and one of its largest economies, noting that the country plays a vital role in advancing regional stability and economic growth.
“The United States is proud to stand alongside Nigeria in pursuit of these common goals,” the statement added.
Washington also identified democratic principles, religious freedom, commercial relations, peace and security as shared priorities between both countries.
It concluded by wishing Nigeria and its people “peace, unity, prosperity, and hope for generations to come.”
In Liberia, President Joseph Boakai sent a congratulatory message to President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people ahead of the anniversary.
Boakai said the occasion offered an opportunity to reflect on the historical partnership between both countries, which he said was rooted in their shared membership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU).
He also highlighted their mutual commitment to peace, democracy and development across West Africa.
Saudi Arabia also extended its congratulations through its embassy in Abuja, which wished the government and people of Nigeria continued peace, progress and prosperity as the country marks the anniversary.
The congratulatory messages came as President Tinubu addressed the nation on Thursday to mark the anniversary.
