AES Seeks Russia’s Support for Monetary Sovereignty

The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) has emphasized the importance of achieving monetary sovereignty.

In an interview with a Russian media outlet during a visit by foreign ministers to Russia, Nigerien Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré highlighted the significance of currency as a key element of sovereignty.

He stated that the region could no longer remain part of the CFA system, suggesting a possible end to the arrangement, though without providing a specific timeline.

The Nigerien diplomat shared a clear vision for the monetary future of the three Sahel states, dismissing doubts about their ability to introduce a new currency, and pointing to other nations that have successfully done so in the past.

He also criticized the actions of the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), which had withheld Mali’s financial assets for eight months.

Bakary Yaou further appealed to countries like Russia for support, noting their crucial role in the potential circulation of a new currency.

This visit to Moscow marks the first formal meeting between the Confederation of Sahel States and the Russian Federation, set against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical alliances in West Africa.
