Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, 28 January 2024, defeated Egypt in round 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The game ended in a draw after Mostafa Mohamed’s 45+1 minute penalty cancelled Meschack Elia’s 37th-minute strike in the first half.
No one was able to find the winner after extra time, despite Egypt being reduced to 10 men when Mohamed Hamdi received a second yellow card in the 100th minute.
DR Congo went ahead to win the game 8-7 on penalty when goalkeeper, Lionel Mpasi-Nzau scored the decisive penalty after Egyptian goalkeeper, Mohamed Abou Gabal rattled his against the top of the crossbar.

The win means DRC will play Guinea who surprisingly beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in the other round 16 clash.
The Pharaohs on the other hand will join the likes of Namibia, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea who were eliminated in the round 16 earlier, back home.
